More Than $130,000 In Scholarships Awarded in 2024 Year To Kentucky High School Seniors
70 high school seniors across Kentucky have just received funds from Independence Bank to continue learning at the post-secondary level.
For the first time since 2019, the financial institution’s annual scholarship reception returned to an in-person gathering hosted Tuesday evening at its Bank location on Frederica Street in Owensboro, KY.
“For many years, it brought us so much joy to host a centralized ceremony,” Charitable Foundation Manager Lauren Patton explained. “Like many other organizations, we had to temporarily pivot to a virtual setup. We see this as a great opportunity to revive the format. We’re elated to welcome these students and their loved ones back to the Bank for this celebratory reception.”
430 applications were received this year across the Bank’s 15-county footprint. Selected students receive scholarships ranging from $500 to $15,000. Seven students received at least $5,000 with a total allocation of $130,550 awarded to the 2024 graduating class.
“We greatly appreciate every student who took time to share their story with us through submitting an application,” President Phil Riney shared. “As our Bank has grown into more counties across Kentucky, it has allowed us to get involved in more schools and assist additional students. Our employees are very involved in the review process and have been impressed with this year’s applicants. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for these students and our scholarship program.”
The Independence Bank Scholarship Program began in 2001 as a dream of the late Charles A. Reid, founding partner and the father of current Chairman Chris Reid. Before his death in 2001, Charles requested a scholarship program be built—providing deserving high school students in need to have the opportunity to receive a college education. Chris, through his leadership and ability to inspire others, has carried out those wishes by growing the program to its current scale. The first scholarship was in the amount of $10,000. Since then, a grand total exceeding $1.8 million dollars has been awarded!
“Since its inception more than 20 years ago, the Independence Bank Scholarship Program has grown exponentially as total funds awarded nears $2 million,” CEO Greg Mullican reflected. “We have been blessed to help hundreds of local students achieve their goal of attaining a college education. It is further rewarding to see the positive impact in our communities when many of these students return home to start their careers.”
A new $10,000 scholarship was formed this year in memory of John Thacker who passed away in January. John was the Bank’s legal counsel for more than two decades, while also serving as a Bank director and was a long-time friend of Chris Reid.
Scoring criteria of all scholarships takes financial need, community involvement, personal interviews, extracurricular activities, a submitted essay, high school grades and ACT scores into consideration.
Independence Bank is incredibly proud to play a part in the journey of the next generation of community contributors.
