A scholarship has just been established to honor the life of a western Kentucky teen. 13-year-old Coleson Vaughn passed away last November in a car crash.

“This scholarship is important to me because it keeps his name alive,” Coleson’s mother Ashley Beasley shared. “It keeps people talking about Coleson and what a wonderful kid he was.”

Over the weekend, more than 90 runners signed up for the inaugural “Camo For Cole 5K,” previously known as “IB Runnin’ Scared.” Participants took off Saturday morning from Independence Bank in Mayfield who hosted the competition. Coleson ran in the race last October, only weeks before his accident.

“I want the community to know he was a kind and loving kid,” Beasley expressed. “He ran this 5K last year, not knowing it would be his last race to ever run. I think it is important to know that life can change in the blink of an eye, so never take these moments for granted.”

Through registration and donations, nearly $7,000 was raised at this year’s memorial event.

“The amount of support at the run was nothing short of amazing,” Beasley added. “I had no idea it would be this big, this fast! I can’t wait to see what the coming years will do.”

The annual run is part of Mayfield-Graves tourism’s fall events.
